Here’s a concise breakdown of the best VSTs for each category of drums.

Drum Sample Players

• XLN Audio XO – An interesting take on organizing, finding, and intelligently matching your drum sounds. Add your own sample folders to the database and XO will display them as colored dots on map relative to similar sounding drums sounds. Standard sound shaping capabilities are available in addition to useful sequencer for those who want to use it.
• Wave Alchemy Triaz – A new player to the game giving XO some competition, offering comparable sound design, drag and drop of midi and audio, and drum layering features.
• FxPansion Geist 2 – While not officially supported (sadly), Geist 2 has to be mentioned here because it is probably the most feature-packed drum VST every made to this day. I mean no one has exceeded it’s capabilities after all these years, and apparently, its still available for sale in 2025. Aside from lacking robust note repeat, Geist 2’s sampling, stretching, beat-detection, layering, and built-in effects are fun to work with. Its just a shame that Roli (purchased FxPansion) does not continue to invest resources in it.
• ADSR Sample Manager – Not officially a drum machine, but offering a way to organize, play, and shape your samples…for free. Running as VST or Standalone, this tool is one of the best for searching through large collections samples quickly. You can even save your search filters to make your workflow faster. It might be the best free tool I’ve ever used.

Acoustic Kits

• XLN Audio Addictive Drums – My personal favorite choice for sound quality, installation size, and versatility of sound design. I have made kits for lo-fi, boom-bap, jazz, cinematic, and rock music. The sound sculpting options make Addictive drums a genre-agnostic piece of software.
• BFD Drums – I have BFD 3 in my arsenal because their is something special about the realism of their recordings. It’s definitely more complicated to setup your custom mixes and kits, but sound engineers and drum tuning fanatics will treasure fine-grained tools. Beware that expansions and 3rd party libraries can add up to hundreds of gigabytes.
• Toontrack Superior/EZDrummer – EZ drummer is intended for immediate play. They offer great stock sounds, and very attractive expansions based on genre. Superior drummer is the bigger, compatible brother offering more signal chain control, and larger, detail-oriented kits. Beware that expansions and 3rd party libraries can add up to hundreds of gigabytes.
• Native Instruments Abbey Roads Collection (Kontakt) – An oldie but goodie! Their collection spans several eras of disctinct signal chains from the 50s to the 90s. The sounds will never get old. The built if effects and routing options allow you to have deep mix control. There are plenty of grooves to get a head start with.

Vintage Drum Machines

• Roland Drum Machine Collection – Roland has revived their 1980s TR drum series (909, 808, 727, 707, and 606). This is the best option if you want to experience the classic user interface that resembles the original hardware.

Forget Not Thy DAW

Most modern DAWs (Ableton, Logic, Bitwig, etc) offer a noteworthy selection of classic, modern, electric, and acoustic drum kits. So while there are VSTs with new/clever features, you should also make use of what you already paid for.

We live is the most convenient time of drum plugins. It is great to have many options to choose from, yet it can be distracting to have many options to choose drum. Here’s a good approach, choose one, make 50+ songs with it. Then decide if you want to try another. Often, that effort will teach you how be more creative with the current tool, just like the legendary producers before us.
